Lake Tekapo, and the whole Mackenzie Basin, is high country close to the Southern Alps. Nights can be cold, all year round. We recommend you wear several warm layers as well as warm, closed shoes or boots. During wintertime, temperatures routinely drop to well below freezing: your very warmest winter clothing including gloves and beanie will be strongly recommended.

Guests are to arrive at the Astro Experience meeting point by their own means. We don’t provide a shuttle service. However, our stargazing location in Takapō Regional Park is very easily accessible. From the town centre of Lake Tekapo it’s a 5 minute drive. On foot it takes ~30 minutes. A map with route description will be provided in the confirmation e-mail.

Book Astro Experience

Our Experiences always go ahead, unless they get cancelled by the guide – in case of ‘bad’ weather. Cancellation by the guide can happen as late as 30 minutes before the start time of your Experience. This is in order to maximise your chance of having a good experience. In practice: if you don’t hear from us by 30 minutes before the start time, it means that the Experience goes ahead as planned.

We will check (1) whether your accommodation provider is well suited for private stargazing experiences; and (2) the availability of a guide for the requested date. Please complete the booking request form and we will get back to you asap.

Minimum age on the Astro Experience is 6 years old. For families with children under 6, there are two main options:

(a) Participate in two rounds, in two subsequent Astro Experience sessions. In this way there is always someone looking after your youngest at your holiday accommodation. Or

(b) Explore the possibility of organising a Private Astro Experience for your family. Send booking enquiry
